Hey, we are LGBTQ refugees in Juba town.
We fled from Gorom Refugee camp as we were threatened to be imprisoned or deported.
Some of our friends are still there, read about them in the post above.
Our story goes back a long, long time. We were born in Uganda, our home country, where we had to flee from due to persecution and oppression because of our queer identity.
We seeked protection in Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya, where we spent over four years.
After all that period of time we were forced to evacuate from kakuma refugee camp because Kenya is no longer accepting LGBTQ people anymore, so we had again to run to a nearby country.
We ran to South Sudan and we were taken in Gorom refugee camp in 2023, the situations in Gorom are so terrifying that the government plus the host community didn’t know our gender identity in the beginning.
As the time continued they got to know that LGBTQ folks are existing in Gorom South Sudan and this has led to the collapse of Across, the organization that had registered our cases in secret.
Many government officials have lost their jobs because of helping LGBTQ folks, right now the government plus the host community are forcing us to evacuate without any assistance and also UNHCR can do nothing, since they are out of funds.
This is why the people who are still in Gorom Refugee camp, don’t get any access to food, drinks or medication. Our community saw no other option but to leave again, transport us all to safety.
But it’s not safe at all, where we are currently at.
We are facing discrimination, homophobia and transphobia on a daily basis.
We are very scared to go outside as people tend to attack us and steal from us.
We tried to apply for jobs here, but since we don’t speak the language and are not from here, we aren’t accepted anywhere. This means we don’t have access to food and drinks, and we starve on a regular basis.
We are still applying for jobs on a regular basis, but with no luck so far.
We are out of funds to travel even further.
Please help us survive!
We thank you so much for your kindness.
